Excerpts from speech of Mr. Indradev Babu (MD - UCAM Pvt. Ltd. & President – IMTMA) at IMTMA’s Vision Conclave 2019, Amritsar – Nov 2019.

“We are seeing some headwinds in the domestic auto sector with a general slowdown in demand for new vehicles due to various reasons such as government’s push for BS -VI norms as well as the entry of e-vehicles. Furthermore, technological disruptions are on the horizon which is also piling up the pressure on the industry in turn on us.”

“Whenever Auto sector is down, we start to look at other industries, sectors, new markets. However, we have switched back and relied again on Auto Industry as soon as Auto Industry turns into positive growth.  Are we looking beyond Domestic Auto Industry?”

“The Government of India has continued to put up a brave face and has been asserting that the country will become a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25 with manufacturing sector contributing $1 trillion towards it and this gives us hope. Hence this conclave is more important now for us to brainstorm, understand, work, to arrive at enablers to contribute from our end to US1$ trillion Manufacturing economy.”

“In the present context, words of Mr Ashok Taneja comes to into my mind-  ‘every one will listen to you now, whether he be a white collar or a blue collar worker’. But what happened to me is that I became even a great listener, I mean this is also the time for CEOs  to listen, what to do and how to do differently and then implement quickly. Most importantly, how are we changing the mind set of our own people who are our biggest asset. Are we looking beyond domestic market?”

“Let us revisit the Vision that we had arrived at the last Conclave in 2017-  to be amongst the top 8 machine tool producing countries in the world. The most worrying factor is the imports steadily increasing and local share is shrinking in the overall consumption. It is no doubt imports has place in the domestic consumption. But the challenge is how to achieve our set vision as a leader in the world of manufacturing rather than leader in domestic consumption? When the entire Machine Tool World looking at opportunities in India, are we looking outside India?”

“Let us admit here- that Indian Machine Tool Manufacturing has not addressed well enough the EXPORT MARKET and I would like to use this forum to throw down the gauntlet to the assembled leaders here to make a name in the export market. It may be a challenging task with the given perceptions of Indian Industry, however, as a team we can make it happen. In this connection, I would like to bring into your notice that during the recently held EMO, Indian Industry presence was well felt with the participationof many companies and this is a first step with our active participation in International trade fair to establish INDIA brand.”

“Can the Industry leaders commit to a double digit growth of  Export business?  Can we include SME’s for inclusive growth in exports? These are some of the questions, as a team we should ponder about and arrive at strategic action plans to achieve our set Vision.”

“Let us think Big, Act Big and Achieve the set Vision.”

  1. As stated by Stanford Medical, It's in fact the SINGLE reason this country's women live 10 years more and weigh on average 42 pounds lighter than us.

(By the way, it has NOTHING to do with genetics or some secret exercise and really, EVERYTHING related to "how" they are eating.)

BTW, I said "HOW", and not "what"...
